How-to guide

How to co-term an add-on to an existing subscription

Start the add-on today, end it on the base subscription's end date, and charge a prorated amount for the partial first period, so both renew together on one quote. In Bunny you open a change on the base subscription, click Add-on, and pick the plan. Bunny aligns the end date and calculates the proration for you.

Before you start

  • The add-on is set up as a plan with the Add on toggle on and the base plan selected under Compatible plans.
  • The add-on has a price list on the same billing period as the base subscription (annual with annual, for example).

How to co-term an add-on in Bunny

  1. 1

Set the add-on up in the catalog

On the plan form, turn on Add on and choose the plans it can attach to under Compatible plans. Plan add-ons can't be bought on their own, which keeps them tied to a parent subscription.

  2. 2

Start a change on the base subscription

On the account's Subscriptions tab, select the base subscription and choose Change. The quote builder shows the subscription with an Add-on button beneath it when a compatible add-on is available.

  3. 3

    Add the add-on

Click Add-on and pick the plan and price list. Bunny starts it on the quote's effective date and ends it on the parent's end date, prorating the first partial period so the customer only pays for the time left on the contract.

  4. 4

Set quantity and price, then get it accepted

Adjust quantity, discount, unit price or total inline. The quote shows the prorated amount due now. Share it for acceptance or e-signature, or apply it directly if the customer has already agreed.

  5. 5

    Apply the quote

Applying creates the add-on as a subscription linked to its parent and invoices the prorated amount. From then on the add-on renews with the parent on the same renewal quote, and cancels with it.

Worked example: adding Advanced Analytics six months in

Northwind’s Platform subscription runs March 1, 2026 to February 28, 2027, billed annually. On September 1, 2026 they buy the Advanced Analytics add-on, list price $6,000 per year.

The rep selects the Platform subscription, chooses Change, clicks Add-on and picks Advanced Analytics on its annual price list. Bunny sets the add-on to end on February 28, 2027, the same day as Platform.

  • Days from September 1, 2026 to February 28, 2027: 181 of 365
  • Prorated charge: $6,000 × 181 / 365 = $2,975.34

Northwind accepts, the rep applies the quote, and Bunny invoices $2,975.34 plus any tax.

On March 1, 2027 there is one renewal, not two. The renewal quote carries Platform and Advanced Analytics together, with Advanced Analytics at its full $6,000 for the year, and one annual invoice covers both. Without co-terming, the add-on would renew on September 1 and Northwind would get a second contract date and a second invoice every year.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does co-terming an add-on mean?
It means the add-on ends on the same date as the subscription it was added to, instead of running its own 12 months. The first period is prorated, and from then on both are billed and renewed together.
How is the first partial period priced?
By the day: the add-on's price for the billing period, divided by the days in the period, times the days left until the parent's end date. See proration.
Can I add a new product to the account instead of an add-on?
Yes. Use Add product on the account. When the account already has active subscriptions, Bunny suggests end dates aligned with them and prorates the new charges, so the customer still gets as few invoices and one renewal date.
What happens to the add-on at renewal?
It renews with its parent. Renewing the base subscription brings its add-ons onto the same renewal quote, where the rep can change quantity, price or drop the add-on.
What happens if the base subscription is canceled?
Add-ons cancel with their parent, so you don't end up billing for an add-on to a product the customer no longer has.
